After its first edition in Munich almost a year ago, and multiple iterations around the world, MVRDV is bringing Carbon Confessions to Rotterdam, its home city. The exhibition will be on view at Keilepand from 31 January to 12 March 2026.
Carbon Confessions offers a candid, behind-the-scenes look at MVRDV’s ongoing exploration of sustainability in architecture. The exhibition traces more than three decades of the firm’s work, from early ideas on densification to its current focus on biodiversity, carbon reduction, and climate-driven material innovation.
The exhibition presents an honest narrative of milestones and missteps that reflect the wider shift in architecture toward climate-conscious design. Here, carbon is not a technical footnote but a central design consideration. Through themes such as adaptive reuse, material experimentation, and the use of digital tools, the exhibition demonstrates how sustainable ambitions can translate into concrete actions.
By sharing lessons learned, knowledge gained, and the challenges of integrating carbon considerations into every layer of its practice, MVRDV aims to foster a transparent conversation about the realities of designing in an era of climate urgency. Designed with minimal waste, the exhibition itself uses repurposed materials, reinforcing the firm’s commitment to resourcefulness.
Everyone is invited to engage in an open dialogue on the carbon challenge in the built environment and to explore how design can contribute to more adaptive and regenerative cities. Throughout the exhibition, MVRDV will also host a series of lectures that expand on its themes, bringing together experts and collaborators to discuss carbon, materials, and the future of sustainable architecture.

De tentoonstelling Carbon Confessions strijkt na München, Berlijn en Parijs neer in Rotterdam – de thuisstad van het internationale architectenbureau MVRDV. Deze expositie is te zien van 31 januari t/m 12 maart in het Keilepand en biedt een openhartige blik op de zoektocht naar CO2-neutrale architectuur en design.
Carbon Confessions volgt meer dan drie decennia aan MVRDV’s projecten, van vroege ideeën over verdichting tot de huidige focus op biodiversiteit, CO2-reductie en innovatief, duurzaam materiaalgebruik. Het is een eerlijke weergave van zowel mijlpalen als moeilijkheden om de huidige duurzame transitie in de architectuursector te weerspiegelen.
Het verminderen van de CO2-uitstoot wordt niet gezien als een technische voetnoot, maar als een centraal onderdeel van ontwerpen. De tentoonstelling belicht thema’s zoals adaptief hergebruik, experimentele bouwmaterialen en het gebruik van digitale tools, en toont aan hoe duurzame ambities kunnen worden omgezet in concrete acties.
MVRDV deelt de lessen en uitdagingen van CO2-reductie binnen elk onderdeel van het bureau. Dit biedt inzicht in de realiteit van het ontwerpen in tijden van klimaatcrisis. De tentoonstelling is ontworpen met minimale ‘carbon footprint’ en maakt gebruik van gerecyclede en hergebruikte materialen.
Bezoekers worden uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan een open gesprek over verlagen van CO2-uitstoot in de gebouwde omgeving en te ontdekken hoe architectuur en design kunnen bijdragen aan groene en duurzame steden. Gedurende de tentoonstelling organiseert MVRDV ook een serie lezingen waarin deze thema’s verder worden uitgediept, met experts die ingaan op CO2-reductie, innovatieve materialen en de toekomst van duurzame architectuur.
