Up in the air: Carbon and high-rise buildings
In het kader van de tentoonstelling Carbon Confessions organiseert MVRDV een lezingenreeks die dieper ingaat op thema’s rond koolstofreductie binnen de architectuursector. In deze reeks komen experts en samenwerkingspartners samen om te spreken over koolstof, materialen en de toekomst van duurzame architectuur.
Op 11 februari gaan Sanne van der Burgh, Head of MVRDV NEXT en Associate Director bij MVRDV, en Emiel Arends, Senior Advisor Urban Affairs bij de gemeente Rotterdam, met elkaar in gesprek. Sanne leidt binnen MVRDV de onderzoeks-, ontwikkelings- en klimaatteams en richt zich daarbij op duurzaamheid, nieuwe technologieën en het verminderen van koolstofuitstoot in ontwerp en bouw. Emiel is expert op het gebied van hoogbouw en koolstof en brengt een levenscyclusperspectief in, waarbij hij de afwegingen en potentiële voordelen van hoge gebouwen gedurende hun volledige levensduur belicht.
Samen bespreken zij de koolstofimpact van hoogbouw, met aandacht voor materiaalkeuzes, bouwmethoden, operationele prestaties en strategieën om zowel de belichaamde als operationele koolstofuitstoot te verminderen.
Biografieën
Sanne van der Burgh (NL) is Associate Director, Head of MVRDV NEXT en architect bij MVRDV. Zij geeft leiding aan meerdere teams binnen het bureau en realiseert projecten van uiteenlopende schaal en in verschillende fasen, verspreid over meerdere continenten. Van der Burgh speelde een sleutelrol in diverse spraakmakende MVRDV-projecten, waaronder het Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen (2021), de renovatie van winkelcentrum Lyon Part-Dieu (2021) en het visionaire project Barapullah Springs (2020), gericht op de revitalisering van de sanitaire voorzieningen en infrastructuur in New Delhi.
Van der Burgh is een veelzijdig architect met aantoonbare ontwerpkwaliteiten. In 2019 werd zij door Architizer uitgeroepen tot een van de 25 veelbelovende jonge architecten om in de gaten te houden. In 2021 won zij de Female Frontier Awards, georganiseerd door World Architecture News, in de categorie Innovation in Architecture. Daarnaast is zij wereldwijd actief als spreker en jurylid.
Emiel Arends is senior adviseur stedelijke zaken bij de gemeente Rotterdam. Hij was betrokken bij talrijke hoogbouwprojecten in de stad, is auteur van de twee meest recente hoogbouwnota’s van Rotterdam en voorzitter van het hoogbouwteam. Naast zijn werk in Rotterdam maakt hij deel uit van het supervisieteam van de Zuidas in Amsterdam, waar hij zich richt op het realiseren van kwalitatief hoogwaardige hoogstedelijke bebouwing en een aantrekkelijke stad op ooghoogte. Daarnaast is hij docent aan de Hogeschool Rotterdam, bij de opleiding Watermanagement.

As part of the Carbon Confessions exhibition, MVRDV is hosting a series of lectures that expand on
themes of carbon reduction in the architecture industry, bringing together experts and collaborators
to discuss carbon, materials, and the future of sustainable architecture.
On 11 February, join Sanne van der Burgh, Head of MVRDV NEXT and Associate Director at MVRDV,
in conversation with Emiel Arends, Senior Advisor on Urban Affairs for the City of Rotterdam. Sanne
leads MVRDV’s research, development, and climate teams, focusing on sustainability, new
technology, and carbon reduction in design and construction. Emiel, an expert on high-rise buildings
and carbon, will bring a lifecycle perspective, highlighting the trade-offs and potential benefits of tall
buildings over their full lifespan.
Together they will discuss the carbon impact of high-rise buildings, exploring material choices, construction methods, operational performance, and strategies to reduce embodied and operational carbon.
Bios
Associate Director, head of MVRDV NEXT and Architect Sanne van der Burgh (NL) leads multiple
teams within MVRDV, realizing projects of various scales, phases, and across several continents. Van
der Burgh played an integral role in high profile MVRDV projects including the Museum Boijmans Van
Beuningen Depot (2021), the refurbishment of the Lyon Part Dieu shopping center (2021), and a
visionary project for revitalizing New Delhi’s sanitation and infrastructure: Barapullah Springs (2020).
Van der Burgh is a versatile architect with demonstrated design achievements. In 2019, Architizer
named her as one of 25 young architects to watch. In 2021, she was the winner of the Female
Frontier Awards, organized by World Architecture News. She won the category “Innovation in
Architecture”. Van der Burgh regularly appears in lectures and juries worldwide.
Emiel Arends is a senior advisor on urban affairs for the City of Rotterdam. He worked on numerous
high-rise projects in the city and. He is the author of the 2 most recent high-rise policies of the city
and chairman of the high-rise team. Next tot his work in Rotterdam is also part of the supervision
team of the Zuid-As in Amsterdam focussing on making good high-density buildings and an attractive
city on eye level. He also is lecturer at the Rotterdam University for the department of water
management.
